Blog Update!!

I know much hasn't happened on my blog for the past few weeks but I'm thinking of having a change of look on here after the hand ins at college this week! New posts of finished work still to come!!

Millinery Sample 1

Over the past few weeks I have been making my samples for three of my ten hat designs.  I have recently finished this design and as a result thought it would be a good idea to see what the hat would sit like on a head like figure.  This is the way this hat would actually sit although a real tweed fabric would be used.  Now to continue with my final chosen hat samples and start to make the end result!

Garment Construction Sketchbook Work

One of the pages in my garment construction sketchbook for the "Friller" project.  On this page I focused on the natural ruffles and frills in mushrooms by looking at close ups of them and experimenting with different things that could be representatives of the ruffles/frills.

Garment Construction Skirt Pattern

(Photo 1 - Pattern 1, Photo 2 - Pattern 2)

Working from the theme of "Friller," this is my first skirt block.  It is constructed from five seperate layers on the front with a scalloped waistband and three layers on the back also with the scallop section hanging from the waistband.

I then decided to change the block so that the skirt layers would hang all the way around without stopping at any seams so made one big block.  I am then going to put a zip down the back of the skirt so it can be worn with ease.  Now all that is left to do is to start cutting my fabric!!!

Surface Decoration

During the first at college, in my surface decoration class, I experimented by printing with real fruit.  I painted onto a real kiwi, then pressed onto paper firstly   By doing so I was able to have the natural textures of the kiwi itself and make my work more interesting by using real fruit.  I started doing this as a pattern in my sketchbook before moving on to making a different textile later on in my project.

Finished Garment - Design Semantics

This is the end result of my design semantics dress!  See previous post for close up of samples and mood boards

First Finished College Garment - Dress

My first finished college garment was a dress based on the theme of gluttony in my design semantics class.  I had to take into account one of the seven deadly sins and from the one I chose construct a garment of my choice from it. When looking at gluttony the first thing that comes to my mind is having too much of something. From this I decided to have a dress with a lot of colour and pattern on the front but have a plain black back to draw back in the dull destructive side because to me I see gluttony as a negative thing. I then added fringing to the bottom of the dress to have even more going on. I now feel that my dress has came together successfully and is a garment that straight away signifies gluttony.

My 5th Year Higher Art and Design Dress

Working from the theme of under water I created this dress for my Higher in 5th year.
I worked on my dress as two individual pieces then after I had finished both sections I sowed them together as one.
The result I gained for this was an A and I was told I received the best design mark in the school!
